Are
you aware of a condition called vulvodynia? ``The symptoms are burning,
pain and sometimes itching in the vulva, plus pain during intercourse or
even on contact. I read a question from a boyfriend of a woman with some
of these symptoms and you did not mention vulvodynia in your answer. Those
of us who suffer with it are trying to spread the word. There is no identifiable
cause or totally effective treatment at the present time, but we are hopeful
and commited to sharing information. ``-Elysa

Chronic
vulvar pain: it affects a surprisingly high number of women By Joel
R. Cooper, The Medical Reporter ©1995, Joel R. Cooper. Vulvodynia
(unremitting pain, stinging, and burning of the vulva) affects an estimated
100,000 - 200,000 U.S. women. This devastating condition, which often undermines
work and family life and makes sexual intercourse painful or impossible,
has been treated in the past with surgery and laser therapy, as well as
antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory medications. Some success
has also been reported with amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant.

R. Cooper, The Medical Reporter ``Approximately 50% of American men
over 40 have experienced problems with impotence to varying degrees, according
to a study by the New England Research Institute. The ability to have an

Vaginismus.
Vaginismus
is an involuntary spasm of the vaginal entrance making intercourse impossible.
This is generally thought to be a fairly rare dysfunction. However, Sarrel
and Sarrel (1979) expand their definition of vaginismus to include difficult
or uncomfortable penetration due to involuntary vaginal contractions. With
this expanded definition the incidence is much higher, about 20% of all
women seen by the Sarrel's experience some degree of vaginismus.

Glazer's i. `` Vulvodynia, also known as vulvar dysesthesia,
literally means pain in the vulva. It is characterized by itching, burning,
stinging or stabbing in the area around the opening of the vagina. Pain
can be unprovoked, varying from constant to intermittent, or occur only
on provocation such as attempted vaginal penetration with sexual
intercourse, a condition also known as vulvar vestibulitis syndrome
or vestibulodynia. Symptoms of vulvodynia may range from mildly irritating
to completely disabling. While a distinct sore, or area of redness may
be visible, often the vagina shows no abnormalities or infections on
gynecological and/or dermatological evaluation. Unfortunately, many doctors
are unaware that these conditions even exist, and may mistakenly suggest
to patients that this is a psychological condition. It is common for women
with vulvodynia to suffer for many years and see many doctors before being
correctly diagnosed.....``

VULVODYNIA``
Vulvodynia is a syndrome of unknown etiology characterized by chronic vulvar
discomfort that can result in both physical and emotional pain in the lives
of affected women.Medical textbooks recognized Vulvodynia around the turn
of the 20th century. This disease went unnoticed in society until a dramatic
increase in the number of cases once again brought Vulvodynia to attention
in the mid-1980's.Although an estimated 150,000 to 300,000 women have Vulvodynia
in the United States, very little is known about how this painful condition
can be prevented, treated or cured.``
-

vulvar burning (vulvodynia) in the absence of abnormal physical findings
was long thought to be an unusual psychosomatic gynecologic problem.- Department
