Definition
of Terms (aegis)-There is a theoretical risk of HIV infection from
any behavior that study has failed to show resulted in HIV infection, but
in which a body fluid which is known to contain
HIV comes in contact with a partner's mucous membranes or blood stream.
There is a known risk of infection wherever a behavior has been documented
to result in HIV transmission by case series or prospective, epidemiological
study. There is a low risk of infection when prospective, cohort-style
studies have failed to demonstrate a statistically significant relationship
between the behavior and infection, but case reports continue to
suggest a correlation. There is a high risk of infection when prospective
cohort-style study has established a relationship and the risk is deemed
substantial by the Subcommittee.

GENITAL HERPES
- A BRIEF SUMMARY ``GENITAL HERPES is caused by a common virus
known as HERPES SIMPLEX. Because of certain differences in laboratory characteristics,
scientists have designated herpes strains as either TYPE 1 or TYPE 2. Type
1 generally causes cold sores around the mouth, while type 2 generally
causes sores on the genital area. In other words, most often, genital herpes
is caused by herpes simplex virus type 2. However, the word "genital" actually
refers only to the area of skin affected - not to the virus type. In fact,
a person may get genital herpes from the mouth of a sexual partner with
an active herpes simplex virus type 1 infection (e.g., a cold sore). In
this case, this person will get type 1 genital herpes. Genital herpes is
a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and is usually passed on through genital
skin contact with an area affected by an active herpes sore in the partner.
After herpes is contracted, it usually causes a skin infection which clears
by itself .......`` From Viridae Clinical Sciences Inc., Vancouver, BC

STDs on the college campus usually are chlamydia, genital herpes and HPV
(genital warts). Bacterial STDs, like gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis,
are relatively easy to cure with antibiotics if caught early. Viral STDs,
like genital herpes, genital warts, Hepatitis B, and HIV cannot be cured;
however, the symptoms can be treated. ``
