Manifestations
of NF 1 Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), also called von
Recklinghausen NF or Peripheral NF, is the common form of NF, characterized
by multiple cafe-au-lait spots and neurofibromas on or under the skin.
Enlargement and deformation of bones and curvature of the spine (scoliosis)
may also occur. It can affect nerves throughout the body, and occasionally,
tumors may develop in the brain , on cranial nerves, or on the spinal cord.

NF - is a rare type of NF characterized by multiple tumors on the cranial
and spinal nerves, and by other lesions of the brain and spinal cord. Person
with NF2 are at a high risk for developing brain tumors and almost all
affected individuals develop tumors on both nerves to the ears (also called
the eighth cranial nerve). Tumors affecting both of the auditory nerves
are the hallmark. 1999 National Neurofibromatosis Foundation

Neurofibromatosis
Neurofibromatosis
is a an autosomal dominant inherited disorder that affects about one in
3,000 individuals. The expression of the gene is variable, meaning that
carriers of the disease may be more or less severely affected. Also, there
is a high rate of mutation, which means that many new cases arise spontaneously
in the embryo and are not inherited from the parents...... Parents' Common

Neurofibromatosis
is
a genetic disorder of the nervous system that causes tumors to form on
the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. NF is a progressive disorder
that affects all races and both sexes equally. The effects of this disorder
can be severe disfigurement, cancer, hearing loss, vision impairment, epilepsy,
bone deformities, and learning disabilities. NF is unpredictable and has
varying manifestations and degrees of severity. NF has no treatment other
than surgical removal of tumors which may some times grow back. There are
two genetically distinct forms of neurofibromatosis. NF-1 affects the peripheral
nervous system and is characterized by multiple cafe-au-lait spots on the
skin and multiple tumors. NF-1 is the most common form of NF and is sometimes
called von Recklinghausen's Disease (in 1882 NF was first delineated in
the medical literature by Dr. Friedrich von Recklinghausen) and perhaps
erroneously called "The Elephant Man's Disease."
-
Neurofibromatosis
is well known and was first felt to be occurring in James Merrick,
or the "elephant man". Today we know that his diagnosis was Proteus syndrome.
The cause of neurofibromatosis, or von Recklinghausen disease, is unknown
but there is a genetic predisposition.......World Craniofacial Foundation

- Classical , or NF1 , neurofibromatosis is characterized by : 6 or
more hyperpigmented skin macules ; 2 or more cutaneous neurofibromata or
1 plexiform neurofibroma ; melanocytic hamartromata of the iris ( Lish
nodules ) ;multiple “freckles”in the intertriginous areas ; distinctive
osseous lesions ; Glioma of the anterior visual pathway ; patient history
of a first - degree relative with NF1 . Ophthalmic manifestations of classical
neurofibromatosis may commonly involve the eyelid , iris , orbit , and
optic nerve .The iris Lish nodes may be one of the key signs in screening
individuals .95% of the individuals with NF1 will have Lish nodules by
the time they are 6 years old .

Resources by Carol. Welcome!
My name is Carol, and my fiance has Neurofibromatosis, type 1. I've collected
links to some of the finest sources of information about NF on the Internet.
There is a great deal of information out there! Unfortunately, a lot of
it was not written with regular people in mind. On these pages, you will
find carefully selected sites - only the best. I hope that this information
will help answer your questions and that you'll find it helpful.

Neurofibromatosis
Type 2 (NF2) Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is an autosomal
dominant disorder characterized by the development of multiple nervous
system tumors. Although affected individuals can have different types of
tumors in various locations, all inevitably develop bilateral vestibular
schwannomas that lead to deafness and death if not treated. An acoustic
tumor (also known as vestibular schwannoma) occurs only in about 10 of
every million Americans. Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) is extremely rare
and is characterized by the presence of bilateral vestibular schwannomas
(tumors on both sides). There are two types of NF2. Early onset NF2 begins
in the teenage years or early 20’s and is characterized by multiple benign
tumors in the central nervous system. In late onset NF2, the second type
of NF2, bilateral acoustic neuromas appear after age 40.

NEUROFIBROMATOSIS
by Tracy Kerby, CRA and Darryl Longee, MD. `` Neurofibromatosis (NF) is
a common genetic disorder of the nervous system that can cause tumors to
form on the nerves anywhere in the body. However, many people have
not heard of NF. Undetectable and unpredictable, NF can attack the body
at any time, especially during periods of physical or hormonal change.
It is caused by an abnormal gene that is either inherited or the result
of spontaneous gene mutation-something goes wrong in a gene. NF does not
discriminate. It affects both genders and every ethnic and racial group.
Over 100,000 people reportedly have NF in the United States. Two distinct
forms of NF are recognized: Neurofibromatosis 1 and Neurofibromatosis 2,
although other forms may exist. `` . Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center

Schwannomatosis
is
a rare form of NF that has only recently been recognized. People with schwannomatosis
develop multiple schwannomas
on cranial, spinal and peripheral nerves--but they do not develop vestibular
tumors and do not go deaf. Affected individuals usually have much greater
problems with pain than with neurological disability, although as with
all forms of NF, schwannomatosis may vary greatly between patients.......National

The
Neurofibromatoses The neurofibromatoses (NF) are
genetic disorders of the nervous system. At this time, two distinct forms
are known: NF1 and NF2. One baby in every 4,000 in the U.S. is born with
NF1. It is one of the most common genetic disorders, affecting some 100,000
Americans. NF2 is less common and occurs in one in every 40,000 births.
In both forms of NF, severity of symptoms can vary greatly. Effects can
be severely disabling, mildly disfiguring or can even go undetected.....

THE
NEUROFIBROMATOSIS ASSOCIATION AIMS OF THE ASSOCIATION. The
Neurofibromatosis Association aims to fight neurofibromatosis (Nf) by:
1. Acting as a mutual support group for
parents and those affected by Nf, sharing problems and
ideas,
2. Linking those affected by Nf to each
other in order to overcome the feeling of isolation they may
experience
3. Linking those affected by Nf with the
medical profession to their mutual benefit,
4. Providing information on Nf to patients,
medical practitioners and others, so promoting
awareness and understanding of the problems
encountered in the disorder,
5. Raising funds to support research into
Nf and its problems,
6. Organising seminars or symposia to study,
discuss, and disseminate information and research
findings on Nf,
7. Maintaining liaison with like-minded
organisations and medical professionals nationally and
internationally,

THE
NEUROFIBROMATOSIS ASSOCIATION Neurofibromatosis
(Nf) affects 1 in 2,500 (Nf1) and 1 in 35,000 (Nf2). It is dominantly inherited
and 50% of cases arise in families with no previous history of Nf, through
spontaneous gene mutation. Its presentation is very variable, even in the
same family. It tends to be progressive. In around 60% of cases the main
problem is "cosmetic"; disfigurement through obvious cafe-au-lait spots
and/or lumps and bumps on the body and sometimes on the face. The impact
of this can be severe and the adverse effect on self esteem and personal
relationships can be imagined....... The Neurofibromatosis Association
