  • How should positive results be interpreted in the absence of a compatible illness? In nonendemic areas positive results of currently available serologic tests will be falsely positive unless there is a very high clinical suspicion of Lyme disease or a history of travel to an endemic area.

  •   -   A positive result in an asymptomatic patient is of no diagnostic value.
      -   A positive result in a patient with atypical symptoms must be interpreted with caution because of the false-positive rate.
      -   A positive result in the face of chronic nonspecific symptoms (e.g., chronic fatigue) without objective clinical findings of  Lyme disease does not establish diagnosis of the disease.
