Allergies-Fact Sheet ``Allergy to latex, a product of the rubber
tree, is becoming increasingly common. As a society, we are exposed to
many products that contain latex including gloves, children's toys, medical
appliances, and condoms. Those who work in laboratory, health care, and

``DESCRIPTION: Health care providers have been wearing latex gloves
for decades. Indeed, contact dermatitis arising from chemicals used in
the manufacture of latex gloves has been well documented since the 1930's.

development of latex glove-induced protein allergies has been linked to
repeated latex glove exposure.`` -The Association of Trial Lawyers of

``Allergy to natural rubber latex, commonly referred to as latex, appears
to have been an
uncommon occurrence before 1980 and the origin of the current proliferation
of cases remains unknown. Attention to latex allergy in recent years has
been prompted by reports of several fatalities due to anaphylaxis induced
by latex retention balloons used in barium enema procedures and by frequent
intra-operative anaphylaxis among children with spina bifida, a fact later
attributed to the high prevalence of latex allergy among these children
which was most probably induced biyearly and repeated exposures.``Allergy

``Allergy to latex was first recognized in the late 1970s. Since then,
it has become a major heath concern as an increasing number of people in
the work place have been affected. Health care workers exposed to latex
gloves or medical products containing latex are especially at risk. It
is estimated that 8-12% of health care workers are latex sensitive. Between
1988-1992, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) received over 1000 reports
of adverse health effects from exposure to latex, including 15 deaths due
to such exposure.`` OSHA

eye irritation, asthma, and anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition in
which the breathing passageways swell closed. About 1% of the general public

Allergy Concerns ``There are three types of latex-caused reactions
that produce different symptoms. Dermatitis, usually appearing as reddened
skin or local contact irritation, may be caused by several chemicals in
the glove manufacturing process. Cell mediated allergic response is a true
allergic response to latex that can cause swelling and blistering in areas
where contact occurred. Even if the skin is washed following exposure,
it often takes 24 to 48 hours before affected areas return to normal. The
third type of reaction is Systemic latex allergy. This is the most serious
of the three. It often leads to an asthmatic episode and may escalate to
anaphylaxis or even death.``THE USAF DENTAL INVESTIGATION SERVICE

A New and Common Problem - January 1, 1998 - American Fami Editorals
B. LAUREN CHAROUS, M.D. Milwaukee Medical Clinic Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
``The occurrence of allergy to natural rubber latex is a singular event
in the annals of medicine. Because of unique advantages
in flexibility, strength, elasticity and barrier properties, latex
gloves have been widely used in medicine since the turn of the century.
Latex is also a common component of many other medical devices, including
drains, catheters and wraps, and it is an ingredient in adhesives used
for dressings and tapes. While allergic contact dermatitis due to sensitization
to rubber chemical additives has been appreciated for over 40 years, rubber
latex itself was long considered immunologically inert. ``Copyright

Health Issues - NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN LATEX LITIGATION ``We are handling
over thirty cases for individuals who have been diagnosed by an antibody
or RAST test with a Type I latex allergy. This is the systemic form of
the allergy and can result in serious health problems. The signs and symptoms
include anaphylactoid reactions, hives, wheezing, swelling, itchy and watery
eyes and "asthma." Most of our clients are health care professionals who
have had extensive exposure to latex gloves. Many have approached us because
their allergy is so severe that they are unable to work in a medical environment.
Please note that we are limiting our cases to persons with Type I allergies.
We have not been taking cases of skin rashes alone, called Type IV reactions.``

Latex Page ``Latex or natural rubber latex is commonly found in health
care products. Although most think of latex gloves,
there are many other sources including airways, intravenous tubing, syringes,
stethoscopes, catheters, dressings and bandages. 99% of latex comes from
the milky cytosio of the tree Hevea brazilienses found in Africa and Southeast
Asia. There are 200 plants capable of producing latex, besides Hevea braziliens
only guayle bush produces enough for commerical use. Natural rubber latex
should not be confused with synthetic rubber, because synthetic rubber
poses no hazard to latex-sensitive individuals.

VIDEOCONFERENCE ON NATURAL RUBBER/LATEX ALLERGY TO BE BROADCAST NATIONWIDE
``WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 26, 1998) - Natural rubber/latex allergy is
an emerging public health issue that impacts a wide range of health care
and workplace procedures and practices. Allergy to natural rubber/latex
containing materials, such as protective gloves, can result in potentially
serious health problems. Managers responsible for workers routinely exposed
to these materials in all occupational settings need to know how to recognize
and prevent serious natural rubber/latex allergy.

Natural Rubber Latex
Allergy FDA Medical Bulletin * Summer 1997 * Volume 27 Number 2- by
Sharon F. Dillard, M.S., Division of Post Market Surveillance, Center for
Devices and
Radiological Health. ``FDA investigations, which ultimately identified
natural latex/natural rubber (NLNR) allergy as an emerging public health
concern, were started in response to voluntary reports submitted by physicians,
nurses, and technologists to medWatch. The first reports described patient
deaths that occurred during barium enema procedures, before the administration
of barium. These initial voluntary reports from vigilant and concerned
health professionals provided critical information that resulted in the
identification of NLNR allergy as the probable cause of the events.``

Latex Allergy (NRL) Fact Sheet ``What Is Latex Allergy? It is an allergic
reaction to products made from natural rubber latex (NRL). It should not
be confused with the more common irritant type reactions that are caused

Latex products contain native or endogenous substances such as proteins
as well as added processing chemicals. A person can be allergic to the
proteins, the focus of this fact sheet, or to the chemicals. ``Karen Alcorn,

Plant Defense-Related
Proteins as Latex Allergens- ``Since the late 1980's, an immediate-type
allergy provoked by natural rubber products has been reported around the
world. It is now known as Latex Allergy. The causative latex products are
wide-ranging. They
include medical devices, dental materials, and household products.
Latex Allergy is prevalent in people who are repeatedly in contact with
latex products. For example, about 5 to 15 % of doctors and nurses have
IgE antibodies to latex antigens.``NIHS / DMD

CAN CAUSE DISABILITY Joseph T. Catalano RN, PhD.CCRN - ``Latex allergy
follows a predictable progression of symptoms that will continue as long
as the person is in contact with the allergen. The symptoms usually begin
as a local irritation and itching on the skin of the hands. The irritation
gradually progresses to hives and open lesions. Repeated exposure to the
allergen then leads to asthma, watery eyes, and
recurrent sinusitis and may eventually, with continued exposure, lead
to anaphylactic shock.

Latex Information Page.``Latex, the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tree,
has been used in the manufacture of medical equipment since 1888 when the
first surgical rubber gloves were manufactured. The possibility of severe
latex (natural rubber) allergy in individuals with spina bifida was first
raised in 1989. Since that time research studies have shown that between
18 and 73% of children and adolescents with spina bifida are sensitive
to latex as measured by history or blood test. The type of allergic reaction
experienced can range from watery and itchy eyes and/or sneezing and coughing,
to hives (a blotchy, raised, itchy, rash) to swelling of the trachea (windpipe)
and even to life-threatening changes in blood pressure and circulation
(anaphylactic shock).
