Dermatopathology``Dermatopathology
is one of the subspecialties of general surgical pathology that deals with
the histologic diagnosis of skin diseases. Accurate diagnosis of cutaneous
disorders, both inflammatory and neoplastic, depends on expert clinical
as well as histologic evaluation. Dermatopathology cases include
common skin diseases as well as complex immunologic diseases, pediatric
diseases, infectious diseases, melanoma, and advanced cutaneous neoplasms.
Specimens are reviewed through routine histology as well as through immunofluorescence,
flow cytometry, image analysis, and electron microscopy.`` The University

Mohs Micrographic
Surgery ``We at Northeast Dermatology Associates specialize
in the recognition and treatment of skin malignancies including Mohs micrographic
surgery performed by Dr. David Goldminz, MD, our board certified Mohs surgeon.
This is a highly specialized procedure for the total removal of skin cancers
under microscopic control. The procedure is named in honor of the physician
who first developed this technique approximately 50 years ago, Dr. Frederick
Mohs, Professor of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin. Removal of certain
types of cancer under microscopic control results in the smallest possible
wound and highest cure.
Mohs
Micrographic Surgeryat Tulane University Medical Center
Timothy Corcoran Flynn, M.D. - Director. Treating Skin Cancer with Mohs
Micrographic Surgery Mohs micrographic surgery is a highly specialized
outpatient procedure which allows a physician to treat skin cancers. The
technique, created by Dr. Frederick Mohs, is as follows:
A local anesthetic (usually lidocaine) is injected
around the skin cancer. The visible portion of the skin cancer is surgically
removed. The physician then removes a thin layer of tissue
at the bed of the cancer. The entire undersurface and skin edges are then
examined microscopically. That tissue is dyed to distinguish between top and
bottom and left from right. A drawing is made so that the physician can pinpoint any
areas of tumor. Once the tissue has been removed, it is sectioned
into very thin slices and examined under a microscope. After examining the edges and underside of the
removed tissue, the physician outlines the exact location of any additional
areas of cancer. If more cancer is found, the procedure is repeated in stages until the
physician finds that no cancer cells remain.

10,000 cases, derived primarily from outpatient biopsies obtained at Falk

residents provide clinical and descriptive correlations which enhance understanding
of the unique clinicohistopathologic quality of dermatopathology. An extensive
teaching set is available for independent study. Residents also participate
in a weekly review of interesting cases and in dermatology grand rounds.
VOCABULARY
OF DERMATOPATHOLOGY ``Probably more so than in any other specialized
area of interest, the proper terminology is exceedingly important

that you should thoroughly familiarize yourself with. Just remember: In

frustrating cases you will have, as well as the most profitable.``
