``Welcome to the Contact Dermatitis Home Page. This web page has arisen
from my efforts to organize a complex subject to enhance my understanding
and practice. My hope is that other practicing physicians (and patients)
will find the information useful in solving their problems. The first phase
of this project was to create a framework consisting of lists of allergens
found in commercial patch-test kits. Synonyms and uses for the allergens
are listed as well as background information, cross-reactions, and other
reactions. Over the coming months, I plan to enhance this web with the
following: Data searches by synonym or uses, Enhanced content, Data searches
based on occupation and hobbies, Greater number of allergens in database.
This web is not an introduction to the subject of contact dermatitis or
patch-testing. For that purpose, I strongly recommend``

Dermatopathology and Immunopathology Laboratories:
Under the direction of Ronald Barr, M.D., these laboratories provide
expertise in the pathology and immunopathology of the skin. The only such
facilities in Orange County, the labs serve community physicians, the UCI
Medical Center, and support the departmental clinical and basic research
protocols. The Immunopathology Laboratory processes biopsy specimens
submitted for immunofluorescence (IF) testing. The laboratory provides
direct or indirect IF testing of skin or serum specimens submitted for
aid in the rapid diagnosis of several skin diseases. IF testing is often
helpful in establishing a diagnosis of lupus erythmatosus, and may sometimes
distinguish different forms of this disorder from one another. Immunofluorescent
testing of certain bullous diseases such as pemphigoid or pemphigus often
allows for a definitive diagnosis in contrast to routine histology alone.
Special immunofluorescence tests using split skin can be used to differentiate
epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) from bullous pemphigoid.

UC Davis Cancer
Center Dermatologic Oncology
During the fiscal year 1991-92, a total of 112 patients were
treated with the Mohs micrographic surgical technique for the management
of basal and squamous cell carcinomas in high-risk locations. Many of these
patients were treated in collaboration with members of the Department of
Otolaryngology and the Division of Plastic Surgery. This unique program
uses the skills and training of individuals from all three specialties
to provide patients with the greatest opportunity for cure, along with
the optimal cosmetic and functional result. In addition, an estimated 500
- 600 patients were treated in general dermatology clinics using a variety
of surgical techniques, including excision, curettage, and cryosurgery.
The Department of Dermatology, in collaboration with the
American Cancer Society, also provided a total of four free skin cancer
screening clinics. These provided an opportunity for individuals without
health insurance or a personal physician skilled in the diagnosis of cutaneous
malignancies to be evaluated. We also used these clinics to educate the
public on the prevention, recognition, and treatment of skin cancer. These
free skin cancer screening clinics all were held in the departmental clinical
facility at Alhambra Plaza, and a total of 253 patients were examined.
Finally, a program has been initiated in the department to provide care
for patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas and mycosis fungoides, managed
in collaboration with the radiation oncologist at the UC Davis Cancer Center.

and is physically located in University Hospital in a suite with faculty,
fellow and staff offices, resident space, and a sign-out room with a 10-head
Olympus microscope. In 1995 there were over 4000 accessions (cases) in
dermatopathology which were generated by physicians at University and Riley
Hospitals, Wishard Hospital and Regenstrief Clinics, and outside physicians
(dermatologists and pathologists). An additional 10,000 cases prepared
at National Health Laboratory in Louisville are sent to the division for
interpretation. Immunofluorescence studies on tissue and sera are available
for review by the residents and fellows. The Departments of Pathology and
Dermatology jointly sponsor a two-year Dermatopathology Fellowship which
intends to prepare individuals for careers in academic medicine. There
are seven faculty members in the Departments of Dermatology and Pathology
with special certification in dermatopathology. Most of these faculty members
are actively in engaged in teaching dermatopathology to students, residents
and fellows. Residents in dermatology and pathology rotate for one to three
months in dermatopathology, depending on the requirements of the residency
program and individual interest. Although there is no requirement for scholarly
activity during the rotation, many of the residents complete case reports
or short projects leading to presentation at a local or national meeting,
and/or to a publication. Residents on the dermatopathology rotation participate
in daily sign-out and the 5 p.m. QC/interesting case conference, attend
weekly dermatology grand rounds, and are required to attend one Sunday

Uninersity of Newcastle
- Department of Dermatology
Newcastle was one of the first academic Departments of Dermatology
in the United Kingdom. It remains, based on publication record, funding
and contribution to therapy, one of the leading European centres for dermatology
and skin disease research. It is perhaps unique in its record of combining
strong basic science - over half a dozen Nature papers - with important
innovations in clinical care, for instance the use of antifungals to treat
seborrhoeic dermatitis and the idea of short duration or pulse therapy
for onychomycosis, two recent examples of clinical innovation. The University
department has recently moved from the laboratories originally provided
by the Wellcome Trust based on the hospital site to refurbished laboratory
and clinical space in the new Medical School. The move, as well as allowing
growth, enhances integration with other research teams particularly in
the new combined Pharmacology, Environmental and Dermatology School.
Resources:The department comprises up to 40 clinical and research
staff. Our new research laboratories and clinical research facility are
located on the second floor of the Medial School, and our clinic service
is based in the adjacent Royal Victoria Infirmary, providing a service
to over a million people in the north east of England. Dermatology is now
part of the School of Pharmacological, Environmental and Dermatological
Sciences. The School has over 20 permanent academic staff and numbers over
100 staff.

Cancer Institute - Melanoma Center This center
has extensive expertise in understanding and treating melanoma, a potentially
fatal and increasingly common skin cancer. The center employs a comprehensive
approach to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of melanoma. Center
researchers pay particular attention to how the disease develops, what
new and combinations of old drugs will work best against it, and how the
body's defenses against it can be strengthened. Because of the center's
strong research programs, patients can access the latest treatment advances,
such as cancer vaccines, new biological therapies, and potential gene therapies.
Currently, the center is leading national and international studies of

``The Department of Dermatology at the University of Rochester was
established in July of 1981. Eastman Kodak Company endowed the James H.
Sterner Chair in Dermatology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry in
honor of the founder of its Laboratory of Industrial Medicine and Medical
Director from 1951-1968. The Dermatology Residency program began
in July 1981 and reached its current size in 1987. The basic philosophy
of the program has been that residents and faculty working closely together
promote the best possible care of patients with both common and complicated
skin diseases.Dermatology is the clinical science which integrates skin
biology with the pathophysiological processes common to main human
diseases. Dermatology education is highly dependent on conceptual
and visual information and the organization and integration of that information.

Center has two main clinical focuses:
Medical Dermatology:Here you may be evaluated and
treated for a wide variety of skin, hair and nail conditions. Your appointment
may be in our general dermatology clinic or in one of our specialized clinics,
depending on your problem. Our specialized clinics include: A clinic for
the evaluation and treatment for problems of hair loss. A clinic for patients
with moles who may be at risk for melanoma. A skin lymphoma clinic. A nail
disorder clinic.
Dermatologic Surgery:Our full-time dermatologic surgeon offers
evaluation and treatment, including surgery for benign and malignant skin
growths in our Dermatologic Surgery Clinic (housed in the Dermatology Center.)
The advanced technique of Mohs micrographic surgery may be used for skin
cancer. We also offer hair transplantation, tumescent liposuction, and
laser surgery to treat scars, port wine stains, broken blood vessels, facial
lines, and other skin lesions.
Skin Cancer Screening. Melanoma (malignant cancer in a mole)
is among the most rapidly increasing cancers in the United States. It may
occur anywhere on the body. Early detection and removal offers the best
chance of cure. Early detection is also important with other, less deadly
skin cancers. As part of your initial visit to the Dermatology Center,
we will offer you a full skin examination. We strongly recommend this screening,
which only takes a few minutes. It is an integral part of good preventive
medical care. Composition of the Division of Dermatology and to provide
