conduct clinical outpatient sessions at Allegheny University Hospitals,
Hahnemann, our primary facility, and at Allegheny University Hospital,
MCP, the Monroe Multispecialty Center and John F. Kennedy Hospital and
its outpatient sites. Each year, the faculty performs some 700 inpatient
consults and 50 inpatient admissions. A full range of dermatologic surgery
procedures including Mohs microscopically controlled surgery is performed
in our outpatient surgical suite. Some 400 patients are followed in the
Department's Cutaneous Lymphoma program under the
direction of Eric Vonderheid, M.D. These facilities and programs allow
for the treatment of a full range of dermatologic problems ranging from
the common to the exotic with a heavy emphasis on skin cancer. In addition
to programs within the Department, residents and staff participate in Grand
Rounds and clinical teaching sessions of many other departments on an ongoing
basis. Also available is a fourth-year elective in dermatopathology. One
or two students each period will review approximately 80 skin biopsy specimens
per day and will be present at the sign-out of these biopsies with the
dermatopathologist and dermatopathology fellow. The student will have access
to all the slides for informal review after the completion of the session
and will be expected to learn the principal diagnostic histologic features
of all common inflammatory skin diseases and skin tumors. Each faculty
member has a special area of interest in clinical research. Basic science
research is performed in our Cutaneous Lymphoma program. ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT

The Dermatology Training Program at Washington University School
ofMedicine is a unified program organized around Barnes, Jewish,
and St. Louis Children's hospitals which form the Washington University
Medical Center. The program is recognized both nationally and internationally
for its long tradition of excellence in dermatologic care and teaching
and for its outstanding contributions to biomedical science. Former residents
successfully practice dermatology nationwide, and many hold prominent academic
positions. Our goal is to ensure that all residents, whether planning careers
in clinical practice or in academic dermatology, receive outstanding clinical
training.Program:The program is fully approved for three years of training
by the American Board of Dermatology, and applications are processed through
the Dermatology Matching program. Each year, five individuals who have
completed an approved internship or training in another specialty are selected
as first year residents. Approximately 20 to 30 applicants are interviewed
for these positions. Applicants interested in actively pursuing basic or
clinical research in preparation for an academic career may do so by tailoring
their training with the supervision of their training director and in accordance
with the guidelines stipulated by the American Board of Dermatology. We
encourage all applicants to discuss their special interests during their
interviews. Facilities: The Division of Dermatology has new Clinical Facilities for both
the private and public clinics and also houses the clinical pharmacology
unit. Patients are cared for by a well-trained staff dedicated to providing
the highest quality of care. A nearby satellite clinic at Barnes West County
Hospital houses the Psoriasis Day Treatment Center. The Dermatology Surgery
Unit & Laser Center are among the finest and most up-to-date facilities
in the country. Outpatient clinics are also located at the St. Louis Children's
Hospital, the John Cochran VA Hospital, Homer G. Philips Hospital, St.
Louis City Hospital and the City Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic. All
are within a five-mile radius of the Medical Center. Residents are supervised
by full-time faculty and by the clinical faculty. The dermatology inpatient service cares for more seriously ill patient and complicated treatment
problems and is under the direction of a member of the full-time staff
together with a dermatology resident and a medical intern. In the aggregate,
approximately 50,000 patients are seen annually. Teaching: The residency program includes intensive one-on-one instruction
in dermatopathology, Mohs, cutaneous and laser surgery, pediatric dermatology
and mycology. Clinical Grand Rounds that include many cases brought in
by the attending (non-full-time) faculty, slide presentation sessions basic
and clinical science conferences and journal club are held on a regular
schedule throughout the year. We are committed to the development of both
outstanding clinicians and academicians in dermatology. Residents are encouraged
to publish interesting case reviews during their training. Research fellowships
are available for individuals interested in beginning or continuing research
training after residency. Fellowships in Mohs-dermatologic surgery and
clinical pharmacology are available on a yearly basis. Excellent research facilities are available in the Division of Dermatology and the
Washington University Medical School complex to provide training in cell
and molecular biology, protein chemistry and molecular genetics. Specific
areas of research interest by the faculty can be found under Faculty and
Staff.

Harvard Medical
School-Department
of Dermatology``For more than 30 years the Harvard Medical
School (HMS) teaching hospitals have benefited from a medical school-wide
departmental structure committed to attracting the best trainees and providing
a complete spectrum of services and specialized expertise to the medical
community. The relatively small number of dermatologists, their unique,
transportable diagnostic equipment (their trained eye and the biopsy punch),
and the emphasis on ambulatory practice provide a need and an opportunity
for cooperation among the teaching hospitals. Larger and more developed
clinical dermatology programs such as those at Massachusetts General Hospital
(MGH) and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) can offer specialized
therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities in laser medicine, phototherapy,
dermatologic surgery, chemosurgery, and other procedures. The small size
of the HMS Department of Dermatology relative to other clinical departments
makes it impractical to establish self-contained basic research programs
in all aspects of basic science related to medicine. On the other hand,
basic research programs in several carefully chosen fields, such as immunodermatology
and photobiology, allow the department to collaborate with large HMS research
programs and contribute to academic dermatology on the national scene.
Two large laboratories located at MGH constitute a large portion of the
dermatology research program at HMS. The Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine
is an interdisciplinary basic and applied research lab emphasizing laser
biology and basic photobiology. The MGH/Harvard Cutaneous Biology Research
Center (CBRC) is a multidisciplinary research group conducting fundamental
research relevant to the structure and function of skin and cutaneous biology
as broadly defined. Additionally, the placement of the Thomas B. Fitzpatrick
Associate Professor of Dermatology at the Brigham & Women's Hospital
has helped to establish the only dermatology research entity in the world
which has its own fully operational transgenic mouse facility.``

(LSB) Peter M. Steinert, Ph.D., Chief The mission of the LSB is to undertake basic and clinical research
on skin diseases, with particular emphasis on the epidermis. We plan, develop, and execute
a comprehensive basic research program on the various structural proteins
and enzymes, and their genes, which are specifically expressed in the epidermis.
We explore in detail the processes by which these macromolecules are assembled
to form a normal cornifying epidermis. In addition, we investigate the
processes of abnormal cornification that occur in a variety of genetic
diseases due to mutations in epidermally-expressed genes. The laboratory
currently consists of two sections: (1) a molecular
biology section devoted to the study of the structure and expression
of several genes expressed during epidermal differentiation and skin diseases;
and (2) a genetic
studies section devoted to the use of direct and indirect genetic approaches
to identify the molecular bases of disorders of cornification and malignant
skin diseases.
